Part 6 of Claude Clocks In: freight moves on paperwork as much as it moves on trucks, and Claude is starting to carry some of the load.
One of the clearest examples of Claude in logistics comes from DoorDash, which built a self-service contact center on Claude to handle support for its 2 million Dashers. The system now fields hundreds of thousands of calls a day, cut development time by 50%, and drove thousands fewer daily escalations to live agents. That is a massive operation, but the underlying challenge is the same one a small freight or distribution company deals with every day: drowning in exceptions, documents, and customer communication.
Here is where a smaller shop can put Claude to work without building anything close to that scale.

Customs and Trade Documentation
International shipments run on paperwork that has zero tolerance for error: commercial invoices, packing lists, HS code classifications, certificates of origin. One wrong code and the shipment sits in customs. Claude drafts these documents from your shipment details, checked and formatted correctly the first time:
- Generating commercial invoices and packing lists from order data
- Classifying goods with the correct HS code from a product description
- Checking that country-of-origin details are consistent across documents
Try this prompt: “Draft a commercial invoice and packing list for this shipment using the order details below, and suggest the correct HS code for each item: [paste order details].”
Delivery Exception Management
A delayed shipment, a customs hold, a damaged pallet: exceptions are the most time-pressured part of the job, and they hit at the worst moments. Claude can read the situation and draft the resolution communication so your team is editing, not starting cold:
- Summarizing a multi-party delivery issue into a clear, actionable note
- Drafting the customer update or carrier dispute letter
- Flagging exceptions that look like part of a bigger pattern, not a one-off
Try this prompt: “Summarize this delivery exception into a clear note for dispatch, then draft a customer update explaining the delay and the revised delivery time: [paste shipment details and issue notes].”
Before your team feeds shipment and customer data into an AI tool, decide what is allowed in and what stays out. That is the kind of guardrail we help logistics companies set up so speed does not come at the cost of security.
Freight Quote and Carrier Contract Comparison
This one is about deciding, not drafting. Feed Claude a handful of carrier quotes or a stack of 3PL contracts, and it lines them up by rate, transit time, and terms, then flags the SLA commitments and penalty clauses that are easy to miss buried in the fine print.
- Comparing carrier quotes side by side on price, transit time, and service level
- Flagging SLA and penalty clauses buried in a 3PL contract
- Summarizing a carrier’s on-time performance from your own shipment data
Try this prompt: “Compare these three carrier quotes for a full truckload from Miami to Atlanta. Flag differences in transit time, liability terms, and any hidden fees, and summarize the tradeoffs: [paste quotes].”
What It Will Not Do
Claude drafts and organizes; it does not track your freight or replace a dispatcher’s judgment.
- Verify every HS code, customs figure, and contract term against the actual shipment or document
- Keep a human making the final call on carrier selection and exception resolution
- Do not paste customer data or carrier contracts into a tool that is not set up to protect them
The Bottom Line
The exceptions and paperwork are not going away, but they no longer have to eat your team’s whole day: Claude takes the first pass so your people spend their time keeping freight moving instead of buried in customs forms.
